Discussing the weather is not exclusively reserved for the Britons. Over the years working in multinational companies I’ve met people from a diverse mix of cultures. Representing the 5* continents of the world, they all showed willingness to talk about the weather. The Russians are no exception. Especially, if the “Beast from the East” sweeps in from Siberia engulfing half of Europe in heavy snow and freezing temperatures in spring.
* I say 5 because I haven’t yet had a chance to discuss weather matters with people living and working in Antarctica, and in Russia we combine Europe + Asia together into the single continent “Eurasia".
Discussing the weather is a good conversation starter whether you’re in a lift or a plane or train. It can also lead to something more special, like friendship or love. At the very least, you may learn a thing or two about coping with the cold from the Russians who have an intimate knowledge of winter.
Here are a few useful words and phrases to kick off a conversation about the weather in Russian.

Great work! If you made it this far, you’re now an expert on talking about the weather in Russian.
To practise your Russian, tell me:
What’s the weather like where you are right now? Are you enjoying it or you'd rather be somewhere else?
