I just had a lesson with James and we wanted to do a quick refresher of cases. It made me think this would help everyone, not just him!

Here's a 1-minute cheat sheet using one very unimpressed cat (кошка) in all 6 cases. Same word (feminine), 6 endings, 6 tiny scenes — should help the differences click fast. Enjoy!

Nominative (subject)

Кошка ест мою пиццу.

The cat is eating my pizza.

Genitive (possession or lack of)

Какая тишина! Сегодня у меня дома нет кошки.

How quiet! Today there's no cat at my place.

Dative (recipient = TO)

Я сказал кошке правду, и она обиделась.

I told the cat the truth, and she got offended.

Accusative (WHAT/WHO object)

Мы нашли кошку в шкафу. Она ела там сосиску.

We found the cat in the wardrobe. She was eating a sausage there.

Instrumental (WITH)

Я не могу спать рядом с кошкой — она храпит громче мужа.

I can't sleep next to/with the cat — she snores louder than my husband.

Prepositional (WHERE)

На кошке висит табличка "не трогать", но никто не слушает.

A sign saying "do not touch" hangs on the cat, but nobody cares.
